Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide Powder (abbreviated as EMD Powder) is a high-purity, crystalline manganese dioxide product prepared by an electrolytic process. It is currently the most widely used type of manganese dioxide, especially dominating the field of battery cathode materials. This document will provide a detailed introduction from aspects such as basic properties, production process, core applications, quality indicators, and comparison with natural manganese dioxide.

II. Production Process

The preparation of EMD powder is a typical wet electrolysis process, with the core steps as follows:

  • 1 Raw Material Preparation: Using manganese carbonate or manganese ore as raw materials, manganese sulfate solution is obtained through sulfuric acid leaching.
  • 2 Purification Treatment: Processes such as neutralization, precipitation, and filtration are adopted to remove impurities such as iron, aluminum, copper, and nickel from the manganese sulfate solution to ensure the purity of the electrolyte.
  • 3 Electrolytic Reaction: The purified manganese sulfate solution is sent to an electrolytic cell, with titanium plates or graphite as the anode and stainless steel as the cathode. Electrolysis is carried out under specific temperature (80–95°C) and current density conditions, and manganese dioxide is deposited on the anode surface.
  • 4 Post-treatment: The anode deposit is peeled off, and after washing, crushing, drying, and sieving, EMD powder with different particle size specifications is obtained.

  • Battery Cathode Material (Largest Application): It is the main cathode material for zinc-manganese dry batteries (including alkaline zinc-manganese batteries and carbon-zinc batteries). During battery discharge, it provides discharge capacity through the reduction reaction of MnO₂.
  • Secondary Battery Material: It can be used as a component of cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries, improving the cycle performance and rate discharge capability of the batteries.
  • Catalyst: It is an efficient catalyst for organic synthesis reactions (such as oxidation of phenols, degradation of organic pollutants) and environmental governance (such as catalytic oxidation of industrial waste gas).
  • Other Fields: It can be used as a decolorizing agent for glass and ceramics, a raw material for ferrite magnetic materials, and an oxidizing agent in chemical production.

  • 1 Production Method:

    EMD: It is a synthetic manganese dioxide produced through an electrolysis process. The common raw material is manganese sulfate solution. Under specific temperature, current density, and pH conditions, Mn²⁺ is oxidized at the anode to deposit as high-purity MnO₂ on the electrode surface. This process is controllable, so the product's purity and crystal structure can be precisely adjusted.

    NMD: It is directly mined from natural manganese ore and processed through crushing, grinding, beneficiation, and purification. Its composition is determined by the ore deposit's geological conditions, so it contains more impurities (such as iron, silicon, aluminum oxides) and has inconsistent properties between different batches.

  • 2 Crystal Structure and Morphology:

    EMD: It mainly has a γ-type crystal structure (some modified EMD can have ε-type or composite structures). The crystal particles are uniform, with a porous, loose morphology and large specific surface area. The pore size distribution is also controllable, which is beneficial for ion diffusion.

    NMD: Its crystal structure is complex, often a mixture of α-type, β-type, γ-type, and amorphous phases, depending on the ore source. The particle size is uneven, the specific surface area is smaller than EMD, and the porosity is lower, which limits its electrochemical performance.
